About me:
I have been a passionate follower of world football for over 25 years. My earliest football memory was listening to the England vs. Cameroon quarter-final from Italia '90 on the radio, having collected the Panini stickers for that World Cup. I can remember reading and re-reading all of the data within that album long after West Germany lifted aloft the Jules Rimet trophy, learning about strange foreign lands and club teams I never knew existed. From that point onwards I was hooked...
Once USA '94 rolled around, I was determined to watch every game and understand every detail. For me, the beautiful game wasn't just about the skills displayed on the pitch, it was also about the numbers, the stats, and those golden nuggets of trivia that impress your mates down the pub (note I was only 10 in 1994, the pub bit came a number of years later).
From the tender age of 8, I created my first (crude) attempt at a world ranking system. Very simple, all written in a notepad, but the first stepping stone to "greater things". From humble beginnings, these rankings have been developed and improved over the course of 25 years. I am a perfectionist at heart, and so, the numbers have been crunched and re-crunched, and have undergone years of scrutiny before being released on the internet. Primarily, I want to use this blog to showcase both my International and Club rankings, and to explain some of the finer details of the systems as time progresses.
If time permits, I might also use this small corner of the internet to discuss the finer details of world football. Perhaps, some of the things to look out for in forthcoming qualifiers and tournaments (with a statistical slant), and some of my (usually strong) opinions on the current state of the beautiful game.
Scott.
